THE FLEA BRAIN
“A tiny brain trying to understand its world.”
LIVE
Where the flea is right now
A sensory signal enters through 892 input channels.
165,122 neural units integrate the incoming information.
Thousands of connections continuously change state.
One decision emerges. The flea moves.
EVERY NUMBER ON THIS PANEL IS READ FROM THE RUNNING FLEABRAIN SIMULATION — SIMULATION DATA.

WHAT IT IS
A nervous system, reconstructed.
A flea is small enough to disappear between grains of dust.
Yet inside that tiny body is a nervous system capable of sensing its surroundings, integrating information and producing extraordinary movement.
FLEABRAIN is an attempt to reconstruct that intelligence.
Not the flea as a character. Not a metaphor.
THE BRAIN ITSELF.
SENSATION / INPUT LAYER
The brain never sees the whole world.
The flea receives fragments of its environment through a narrow collection of biological signals.

PARTICLES ENTER THE NEURAL SYSTEM CONTINUOUSLY. EACH SIGNAL MODIFIES STATE — NONE OF THEM FORM A COMPLETE PICTURE OF THE WORLD.
NEURAL INTEGRATION
Fragments become state.
Individual signals mean very little on their own. A single vibration may be noise. Repeated vibration may indicate movement. Signals must be combined across time.

SIGNAL PROPAGATION
MEMORY / SHORT-TERM STATE
It reacts to what has been happening.
Older information gradually loses influence. Recent information becomes more important.
The flea therefore does not simply react to one signal. It reacts to what has been happening.
REFLEX / FAST PATH
Sometimes intelligence is simply responding fast enough.
Some responses require almost no deliberation. A compact nervous system can still demonstrate useful intelligence through extremely fast responses.
THE JUMP
One controlled explosion of stored energy.

“The jump is not a single event. It is the final output of an entire biological process.”
MOTOR CONTROL / OUTPUT
Neural activity becomes movement.
The simulation transforms internal neural states into motor variables. Small differences in neural activity can produce entirely different movement.

COMPLEX BEHAVIOR
DOES NOT NECESSARILY
REQUIRE A LARGE BRAIN.
CONTINUOUS SIMULATION
There is no final state.
Another input. Another neural state. Another response.
↺ THE LOOP NEVER CLOSES.
RECONSTRUCTION
Build the smallest convincing artificial flea brain.
LIMITATIONS
The parts that aren't the flea.
FLEABRAIN is not a claim that the simulation is a literal copy of a real flea nervous system.
The numerical architecture is part of the simulation.
The biological behavior is an approximation.
The system is inspired by biological mechanisms, but it does not reproduce every neuron, synapse or molecular process of an actual flea.
The purpose is not to claim perfect replication.
The purpose is to explore how much behavior can emerge from a compact nervous system.
